Rock Island Technical Society
The last railroad to enter the Texas Panhandle, the Rock Island actually had quite a number of lines. From the Memphis-Tucumcari route through Amarillo to the Golden State Route through the Top of Texas, and the many branchlines, the Rock Island was a colorful line. Where else in the Panhandle were there grades in excess of 3% requiring trains to be broken up into as many as three groups to get up the hill?
