Southern Pacific Cement Hoppers

Southern Pacific Pullman-Standard PS-2 Two Bay Covered Hoppers by Kadee Quality Cars

Kadee Quality Cars is the premier HO-scale manufacturer, period! The detail and accuracy of their cars are an order of magnitude above their closest competitor. Our brand new run of the PS-2 two bay covered hopper is no exception!

The Amarillo Railroad Museum, Inc. worked with Kadee for over a year to have these exquisite cars produced in this eye-catching Southern Pacific scheme. The models represent a group of 250 cars in the 401100-401349 series, H70-16 class, built in 1957 with a 2003 cubic foot capacity. The ars are painted a light alkali gray with red lettering. The Southern Pacific lettered these cars in black, red, and yellow. We chose red because of its visual appeal and because few models of Southern Pacific cars with red lettering are produced. The cars come equipped with Miner brake wheels, Kadee #58 scale couplers, proper NMRA standard weight, and self-centering trucks. The details on the cars are absolutely incredible! Even a close-up photo of the ends really does not do justice to the model. All dimensions seem to be prototypical. the supports, grabs and handrails are lacy and delicate-looking, but are quite flexible. The roof walk is see through and the hatch detail is impeccable. Notice the crisp lettering. Every possible marking is rendered on the model, even down to the spring travel notation just above the coupler pocket.

Builder's photos illustrate the as-delivered paint scheme we used on the model. We were not able to find complete information on which part of the number series received black, red, or yellow lettering, but working with Kadee and railroad historians, we were able to confirm the numbers we used are correct for cars with red lettering. The prototype cars were used for bulk loading, and most were used for cement service. In-service photos show heavily weathered (imagine that - heavily weathered Southern Pacific . . .!) with the dents and dings typically associated with this sort of rough service.

We are offering two ready-to-run cars numbered 401131 and 401306. Kadee is also offering this car in two additional numbers (401155 and 401306), so the modeler can assemble a fleet of four cars. This is a joint venture between the Amarillo Railroad Museum, Inc. and Kadee Quality Products, however, we are not cross-selling the cars. You have to order the cars we have from us and the Kadee cars from one of their national dealers. Our cars are limited to a run of only 150 of each number, and they will not be repeated. Kadee is producing many more of their two numbers, making our cars the scarcer of the two runs.

The Amarillo Railroad Museum, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit educational corporation chartered in the State of Texas. All sales proceeds go to the operation of our museum. We produced these cars as an example of historically-accurate models that add to the understanding and enjoyment of railroad history. These models are exclusively produced under a licensing agreement with the Union Pacific Railroad, Inc.
