If you are interested in nuclear weapons or military history, this is the book for you. This book is about a nuclear special weapons storage site located in the Manzano Mountains, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The site served our national defense program from 1950 through 1971 as a storage facility for some of the most destructive nuclear weapons ever created. In 1971, all weapons were transferred to a new facility on Kirtland Air Force Base, and the Manzano site was ultimately rendered "abandoned in place" in 1992 by the Department of Defense. The book contains historical information about New Mexico, Albuquerque, and Sandia Base as they relate to the development of site, and Information about inside the site was provided by fifteen former USAF personnel who were stationed there during the time period 1953 through 1992. It has stories about nuclear weapons accidents, aircraft crashes, almost shooting down a USAF helicopter to protect a weapon and radiation demonstration called "tickling the tigers tail." Evan as a relic of the past, Manzano still contributes to our nuclear weapons program today.
